Why lime, not cement

Solid historic walls need to breathe. Cement renders and gypsum plasters trap moisture, salt and decay behind an impermeable skin. Hot lime and hydraulic lime stay flexible, move with the building, and let moisture escape. On listed buildings the correct material is not a preference — it is often a conservation requirement.
